Favorite quote from a novel?

I got the idea for this post from http://www.practiceofmadness.com/ a post titled “What is your favourite quote from a novel of all time?” Here

My favorite quotes are so varied that I thought I’d restrict myself to favorite opening line of a book. There are a lot of very famous opening lines out there, “Twas the best of times”, “Call me Ishmael”, etc. But I have one in mind that so embodies the spirit and soul of the story that I have always loved and admired it.

“He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad.” from “Scaramouche” by Rafael Sabatini

Not only did that line set the feel for the story so well, but it eventually became the epitaph on Raphael Sabatini’s gravestone.

What is your favorite opening line?
